Non-traditional Applicants

You may consider yourself non-traditional for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you're older than the average medical school applicant. Maybe you have low undergraduate grades or an MCAT score below the national average. Fortunately, you may be less "non-traditional" than you think. In fact, it's becoming increasingly incorrect to think of medical students as traditional or non-traditional. The average age of matriculating medical students is increasing, and every year schools across the country admit students with a wide range of GPAs and MCAT scores. Some of those scores are much lower than you might think.

Of course grades and MCAT scores are important, but the traits that medical admissions committees truly value are things like maturity, energy, passion, curiosity, tact, and compassion. These traits are more difficult to measure, and they are the things that come through in your primary and secondary applications, your work and volunteer history, and your interviews.

We can help you prepare for the MCAT and guide you in selecting undergraduate or postraduate courses. But more importantly, we can help you convey the traits you already possess to the admissions committee. Everyone is passionate about something, and if you are older than the average med student, then you likely possess more maturity and tact. It is these characteristics that will make you valuable to the school. Consequently, it is of primary importance that you effectvely communicate them in your application.
